A few days ago, I was having lunch with a friend and noticed she looked so vibrant and energized. I asked her what she had been doing and she said she had started juicing! After hearing her story, I asked her if she would share a little bit for my readers!
Here is her story!
Last September I had my annual physical. While I am overall a fairly healthy person my doctor informed me that my blood sugar level was high. She wanted me to stop eating sugary foods and lower my carb intake. Now, I love to bake and I haven't met a dessert I didn't like! My sister is a type 1 diabetic, and diabetes run in my family, so I knew I had to follow my doctor's advice.
About this same time my husband and I watched the documentary "Fat Sick and Nearly Dead". (http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/) The premise revolves around the fact that we are not eating nearly enough vegetables. A way to increase vegetable consumption is through juicing. The documentary followed people who had made this a habit and their stories were amazing - weight loss, reduction of prescribed medicines and overall higher energy levels. We thought we would give it a try, knowing we too should eat more vegetables.
In January I returned to my doctor for results of my new blood test. Everything changed from September's test - bad cholesterol was lower, good cholesterol was higher, blood sugar was perfect and tests that measure the efficiency of both the liver and kidneys showed improvements as well.
I'm a believer of moderation so I still enjoy an occasional sweet treat every now and then - and I enjoy a delicious vegetable juice each day too!
I use a Breville Juicer http://www.brevilleusa.com/beverages/juicers.html
My favorite juices right now are:
1 whole bunch cilantro
1/2 a pineapple chopped
12 oz coconut water
1/2 lemon or 1/2 lime
I also enjoy:
4 carrots
A handful of kale
2 apples
1 cucumber
2 celery
ginger to taste
These juices provide great energy - some mornings no coffee! You just feel good drinking them and on days I skip my juice, my body actually craves it!
